Queensland storm season is fast approaching and with that comes high winds and bucket loads of rain!
There are some things you can do to prepare for the impending wind and rain to reduce the risk of any damage to your property during the storm season.
Tips to prepare your property for storm season
- Keep gutters and drains clear
Blockages caused from leaves in your gutter can cause water to overflow into your roof during a downfall of rain. You should maintain your gutters and drains throughout the year but this is especially important on the lead up to storm season. If any plants or furniture is blocking draining grates ensure they are removed so water can flow freely.
- Prepare trees and branches that are close to your home
Contact a qualified arborist to have your trees thoroughly checked every 2-3 years for any weak or risky trees or branches that could fall in the wake of a storm. If any are looking like they could pose a risk to your property then they should be tended to before storms hit.
- Check that your roof is in good condition.
Roofs should be checked every year and especially after major weather events such as hail storms for signs of damage. Any cracked or displaced tiles should be fixed immediately to ensure that your roof wouldn’t leak at the first sign of rain.
- Secure loose items around the property.
Strong winds can pick up the biggest and bulkiest of items. Outdoor furniture, children’s play areas, trampolines are all at risk of gaining flight, potentially causing damage to homes. Identify items that need to be tied down and secured before the storm hits. If you’re away during storm season, prepare in advance so that you don’t come back to any nasty surprises!
Ensure your home is storm ready and reduce your risk of any nasty surprises.
